About this video

This episode of Plastic Perspectives with Dr. Plano, the practice’s video series, is about tummy tucks. According to its description, it covers what the procedure involves, care after surgery and how to get the best results, with a focus on shaping the abdomen for a balanced, natural look.

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes extra skin and fat from the abdomen. In most cases the surgeon also tightens the tissue over abdominal muscles that have separated, a common change after pregnancy, large swings in weight or aging. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons points out that it is not a substitute for weight loss or exercise. Surgeons often suggest waiting if you plan to lose a lot of weight or may become pregnant, since either can change the result, and smoking raises the risk of healing problems. Mayo Clinic lists fluid buildup under the skin, slow wound healing, changes in skin feeling and a lasting scar, usually placed low along the swimsuit line, among the risks.

A board-certified plastic surgeon can review your health history and goals and tell you whether a tummy tuck, or another body contouring procedure, fits your situation.
