DYK? Acne is a common side effect of bariatric surgery. Let’s talk about why.
No, the surgery itself does not cause acne, but the changes your body goes through as a result of surgery can make acne worse.
Why does acne sometimes get worse?
There are a lot of factors that influence the health of your skin, but there’s two top reasons why bariatric surgery patients might see their skin change after surgery: hormones and nutritional deficiencies.Rapid weight loss disrupts your hormones. Just like in puberty, hormonal changes can lead to acne. While your body heals from surgery in the first few months, your body will have more cortisol than usual, which can also lead to increased breakouts.
Getting the right amount of protein, vitamins, and water are all important for healthy skin. If you’re struggling to get enough nutrients after surgery, it could manifest as worsening acne. This can for the most part be avoided if you’re sticking close to the diet and the bariatric vitamins set by your doctor.
Regardless of the cause, acne can be frustrating – and painful. The good news is, that there are many treatment options out there for it!
