It’s myth busting time again. Here are the top four nutrition myths I hear as a bariatric surgeon.
1⃣ “Carbs are bad.”
Carbs are the body’s primary source of energy, so while protein should be eaten first, your next focus should be on complex carbohydrates (cooked vegetables, whole grains, and legumes). Avoid refined carbs, like sugar or white bread, but remember all foods can fit into a healthy diet in moderation.2⃣ “As long as I get enough protein, I can eat whatever I want.”
Overall nutrition quality matters for long-term success, weight maintenance, and overall health. Even with adequate protein, a diet lacking vegetables, fruits, and whole grains will not provide the vitamins, fiber, and minerals your body needs to stay healthy.3⃣ “I can meet all my nutrient needs through food alone.”
Bariatric surgery inherently reduces your portion size and can also affect nutrient absorption. If you don’t add in additional supplementation, deficiencies in iron, vitamin B12, calcium, vitamin A,D,K,E and folate can happen.4⃣ “If I’m eating right, then exercise isn’t as important.”
While proper nutrition is critical after bariatric surgery, exercise is equally essential for long-term weight loss, muscle preservation, bone density and overall health.
