It’s true! Bariatric surgery can change how foods taste to you. Let’s talk about why
What foods are affected?
The most common differences found by different studies of bariatric patients were: increased sensitivity to sweetness, increased aversion to fatty food, and increased intolerance to meat. Why does this happen?
The physical changes your body experiences after surgery reduce the amount of dopamine you get from eating. This helps teach your body not to seek out food when it wants to feel better, but can also affect the way you experience the taste of sweet or fatty foods. Will I stop wanting my favorite foods?
Don’t panic! Not everyone experiences these changes. And even if you do experience them, it’s often temporary. Keep revisiting different foods to see how your body reacts over time.If you’ve had bariatric surgery, did you notice any changes to how you taste? Leave your answers in the comments!
