“I can’t see any difference” is something I hear from patients a lot. Let’s talk about self-perception after weight loss surgery.
Body dysmorphia is a condition that causes a person to fixate on the things they believe are flaws in their appearance, such as their body fat. A person with body dysmorphia could lose a lot of weight and look very differently to their loved ones, but they would still be unhappy with their reflection in the mirror.
This type of negative self-perception often requires professional mental health support to manage and work through, but there are other skills you can practice at home, too.
If looking in the mirror for changes in your appearance is just leading you to frustration or sadness, try focusing on objective ways to measure that your health is improving. Introspective work like meditation, journaling, and therapy can help you work through your body image issues and develop a better relationship with your body.
Choosing to pursue bariatric surgery and sticking with the process is a major feat. Be kind to yourself and give yourself some grace if you’re not seeing the results at the pace you expected. You got this.
