Is it possible to lose too much weight after bariatric surgery?

The short answer is: it’s very unlikely.

It’s extraordinarily rare, and usually the result of a complication that needs to be fixed or a pre-existing eating disorder that needs to be addressed.

For the first year after bariatric surgery, it might seem like you’re losing weight extremely quickly, but weight loss usually slows and stabilizes at around 9 months as the body reaches a new set point.

Getting so thin that it’s unhealthy is extremely rare, and I tell my patients not to add to their stress by worrying about situations that most likely won’t happen to them.

If you had any fears about bariatric surgery, share them in the comments below and tell us how you pushed past them to start your weight loss journey. We’d love to hear from you!
