Let’s talk about bariatric surgery + mental health.

People with obesity are more likely to experience depression due to a mix of biological, social, and psychological factors. So the natural question is: If obesity is contributing to depression, will losing weight cure it?

Short answer: No but it does help some people!

“Weight loss surgery” is never *just* about weight loss. Patients considering bariatric surgery should prioritize their mental health and seek support prior to the procedure (support groups, individual therapy, mindfulness exercises, etc.). You should also be prepared to have a strong mental health support system after surgery.

You’re not alone in this – there’s a whole community out here cheering you on.
