Wondering if you qualify for bariatric surgery? Here’s what you need to know

First, medically qualifying for surgery does not equal having insurance coverage.

Some insurance plans (even through your job) don’t cover bariatric surgery at all. Before anything else, check your policy!

Medically qualifying for surgery is based on BMI. This number is an oversimplified screening tool to put people in categories for treatment.

To qualify medically for bariatric surgery, the main options are:
Have a BMI of 40 or higher.
Have a BMI of 35 or higher *and* a recognized obesity-related medical issue.

In some policies, your ethnicity can play a factor. Medically speaking, persons of Asian ancestry are more susceptible to getting medical problems from obesity at a lower BMI. For that population, surgery can be indicated for a BMI of 32.5 (with a recognized medical problem).

Not sure if you qualify? Talking to a bariatric surgeon is the best place to start. We’ll help you figure it out.
