When is it safe to hit the gym again after bariatric surgery?
Phase 1 → During the first few days after surgery, we actually want you up and walking immediately. Even just a few minutes at a time will make a big difference in your recovery.
Phase 2 → For the first 1-4 weeks, we don’t want you to put any extra pressure on the muscles while they heal. We usually give a restriction on lifting around 15-20lbs during this time. Lifting heavy things – even children or groceries – can increase your risk of hernias.
Phase 3 →From 4-8 weeks after surgery, slowly build endurance by adding in light cardio or body weight exercises such as squats. Just keep the pace steady and remember, consistency is key.
Phase 4 →After 8 weeks, it’s fully safe to start adding in weight training to build or maintain muscle while you lose weight. Focus on form, control, and building strength without overdoing it.
Phase 5 → Physical activity is needed for long-term success. Find something enjoyable that’s easier to stick to to build a consistent routine. Be sure to have built in recovery days to let your body rest too!
Remember, every step forward—no matter how small—is a step towards a healthier, stronger you.
