Tired after surgery? We get it. That’s why smart grocery shopping is key to your post-op success.
Dr. Barr breaks down what to actually buy during the liquid diet phase—and what to leave on the shelf even if it screams “Protein” on the label.
It’s not about cutting all sugar—just the added stuff that slows you down.

Hey guys, Dr. Barr here, a bariatric surgeon in Dallas. I’m in the grocery store today to help set you up for success after surgery
You’re tired, you’re busy, and cooking is the last thing on your mind—so you lean on grab-and-go stuff. But let’s look at what’s actually good for your liquid phase
Smoothies that say “Protein Plus”
37g of added sugar
That’s more than a pack of M&Ms or Starbursts
Better Choice:
Drinkable yogurt or kefir with no added sugar
Still has some natural sugar, but way cleaner!
Broth vs. Bone Broth:
Regular broth = low protein
Bone broth = triple the protein
Look for powdered options too for convenience
Watch out: some soups labeled “high protein” sneak in more carbs than protein and hidden sugars
Drink Mixes:
Most modern ones = no added sugar
But old-school brands like Gatorade, Pedialyte, and Liquid IV?
Up to 5g sugar per tablespoon
First ingredient = cane sugar
Final tip:
Always read your labels. It’s not about being sugar-free—it’s about avoiding hidden, processed sugar that slows your healing and your weight loss goals.
Stay hydrated.
Stay informed.
And if you’re in Dallas and need a surgeon, come see us at DFW Bariatric & General Surgery.
