Bariatric Grocery Guide Part 2: Soft Food Stage
Hey guys, Dr. Barr here again! Let’s talk about soft foods after bariatric surgery—and how store-bought options can trip you up if you’re not careful. At my practice, we skip the purée phase and go straight to soft foods—meaning anything you could eat without teeth. But not all “soft” foods are created equal…
Skip These Common Mistakes
Mashed potatoes & sweet potatoes: Low in protein + often packed with added sugar
Flavored yogurts: May be labeled “low-cal” but still have lots of added sugars
Pre-made salads: May include nuts, mayo, or sugar-heavy dressings
Choose These Instead
Hummus: Chickpeas = fiber + protein without the sugar
Greek yogurt: Look for plain or “no added sugar” varieties
Homemade soft protein salads: Up to 40g protein per cup!
Soups: Only if they’re free of noodles, grains, or sugar
Refried or cooked beans: Soft, high in protein, low in sugar
Pro Tip: Always check nutrition labels. Your goals = hydration + protein for healing. Sugar isn’t the enemy, but added sugars can slow your progress.
