Managing your expectations for the period after bariatric surgery is important. Setting realistic goals and timelines is vital to your success, because recovery and weight loss don’t happen overnight.

Important things to consider are:

Pain - We do minimally invasive surgery, which causes the least amount of pain possible, but there will still be some pain, soreness, and discomfort after surgery.

Your weight loss - Progress can be slow at first because surgery cause the release of stress hormones that cause the body to retain fluid and fight your ability to lose fat. This is normal. Trust the process, and the results will come.

Getting back to normal activity - At my practice, you’ll stay in the hospital overnight for observation, and most people usually return to work over the next week. But we do ask that you not lift anything heavier than 15 lbs for 4 to 6 weeks while your body heals.

Diet - You’ll gradually work your way back to solid foods to let your stomach heal. At my practice, this means 2 weeks of liquids, 2 weeks of soft foods, and a return to solid foods after 4 weeks or so.

And remember, everyone is different. Avoid comparing your progress to others. Focus on yourself and your own journey to wellness, because you’ve made an important decision and you deserve to feel good about that.
