Let’s talk about cannabis and bariatric surgery — because I get this question all the time.
Here’s the breakdown:
1⃣ Nicotine is a hard stop before surgery — huge complication risks. If you use cannabis, make sure it’s not mixed with tobacco.
2⃣ CBD vs THC: CBD has anti-inflammatory benefits and is approved for some medical uses. THC affects appetite and nausea.
3⃣ Safety in surgery:
Occasional THC: studies show no major difference in complications.
Heavy/chronic THC: higher risk of pneumonia, stroke, heart attack, and blood clots post-op.
4⃣ Post-surgery effects: surgery can make THC hit faster and stronger — which can lead to unpleasant side effects and derail weight loss progress.
5⃣ Smoking vs edibles: Edibles often mean more munchies + lots of sugar. That’s not helpful for weight loss goals.Bottom line: THC isn’t always off-limits forever — but your care team needs to know if you’re using it.
