What’s “dumping syndrome”? When you get bariatric surgery like the gastric bypass, the way your body digests food changes. Some people who get a bypass experience dumping syndrome, where food moves too quickly from the stomach to the small intestine.
There are 2⃣ types: Early dumping and late dumping.
Early dumping can happen 10-30 minutes after eating. Symptoms to watch for include: lightheadedness, dizziness, increased heart rate, cramps, or diarrhea.
Late dumping can happen 1-3 hours after eating. Symptoms to watch for include: weakness, confusion, sweating, dizziness, or low blood sugar.
Tips to Regulate Digestion & Prevent Dumping
Divide your daily calories into 6 small meals
Separate your solids and liquids so food travels slower
Choose high protein and complex carbs (whole grains, fruits, and vegetables) over simple carbs
In severe cases, bypass procedures can sometimes be reversedHave a question about dumping syndrome or something else related to bariatric surgery?
