“How do I survive holiday get-togethers after bariatric surgery?” Here are some tips to stay on track with your diet over the course of the holiday season.

Portion control: Use a smaller size plate when grabbing your food and make multiple trips. Try putting only one item at a time on your plate, which forces you to think about whether you really want to go get more.

Focus on protein: When deciding what to eat, start with protein so you’ll have less room to fill your stomach with things that are less nutritious.

Pregame (no, not that kind): Try drinking a protein shake, a lot of water, or filling up on a healthier alternative before you even get to the party.

Contribute: If you are going to a potluck or family dinner, make a healthy, high-protein recipe and bring it to share. Check out my videos on pumpkin soup and green bean casserole for some ideas.

Mistakes happen, don’t spiral: If you do over- indulge, don’t let it derail your momentum. You’re still doing great things to help take control of your health.
