There’s a lot of misinformation about bariatric surgery–Let’s set the record straight on the top five myths I hear as a bariatric surgeon:

You can never drink through a straw or have carbonation again after surgery.
After four weeks of recovery, most patients can use a straw or drink carbonation again, but they might experience discomfort if they do so.

You can’t eat ever again after surgery.
There are diet and lifestyle changes that have to be made, like filling up on protein first so that carbs become an afterthought. It’s about choosing your food wisely, not eliminating carbs completely.

Most people gain the weight back.
The majority of patients maintain successful weight loss long term. Remember, bariatric surgery isn’t a one time fix; it’s a lifelong commitment to healthy choices.

You’ll never eat normal foods again.
Post-surgery, you will start with a liquid diet, then gradually move to soft foods, before reintroducing solid foods. Patients can still enjoy their favorite foods, just less often and in smaller portions.

THE TOP MYTH: Surgery is cheating or the easy way out.
Bariatric surgery is not a shortcut–it’s hard work and a long term commitment. While it is a very effective tool, it’s your efforts in your diet, exercise, and mental health that truly make the difference.
