Gastric band: Adjustable silicone band placed around the upper part of the stomach. These were super popular in the 90s, but we’ve since discovered the bands have a high risk of complications that occur over time. I actually take out more of these than I have ever put in!
Sleeve gastrectomy: Removes the outer curve of the stomach, so that what’s left is about the size and shape of a. This decreases the amount of hunger hormones produced for the first year, so you get the powerful combination of physical restriction and reduced appetite, kickstarting your weight loss. This one can worsen acid reflux, so it may not be the best choice for someone with GERD.
