Types of bariatric surgery, part 2! Check out part 1 for an overview of the gastric band and the sleeve gastrectomy.
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB): This method has been around since the 60s, so it’s the procedure we compare all newer surgeries to! It has about 10% more excess weight loss than a sleeve, but on the other hand is a little bit higher risk.
Duodenal switch: This one includes both a sleeve and a bypass. We bypass much more of the intestines than in RYGB, leading to about 30% more excess weight loss. But more intestinal bypass means even more risk of vitamin deficiencies.
That’s a high-level look at each type — be sure to talk with your surgeon about which surgery is right for you.
