DFW Bariatrics and General Surgery, Dr. Sachin Kukreja’s practice, posted this video on its YouTube channel on February 9, 2025.
About this video
This short video makes the point that bariatric surgery can do more than help people lose weight. Its description says the weight loss can improve many conditions that obesity causes or makes worse, naming type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, acid reflux, infertility and arthritis, and that it can help mental health too.
Several of these conditions affect the heart. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery lists high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke among the health risks linked to obesity, along with sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and some cancers. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) names type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, unhealthy cholesterol levels, sleep apnea, urinary incontinence and joint pain among the problems weight-loss surgery can improve, and says that for people with severe obesity it can extend life. Because medicines for these conditions may need to change as weight comes off, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery advises making those changes with your primary care doctor and surgeon, not on your own.
A bariatric surgeon can tell you whether surgery is an option for you, and your primary care doctor or cardiologist can explain what weight loss could mean for your heart. More videos are on the Weight Loss and Heart Health pages, and the practice’s other videos are on Dr. Sachin Kukreja’s profile.
