When it comes to surgery, the fear of the unknown is often worse than the actual procedure. Here’s an overview of what to expect on the day of your bariatric surgery.

Preparing the Night Before
Pre-op can start weeks before surgery, with diet changes or other instructions. The night before surgery sometimes includes other modifications to your routine, such as:
Shaving the preoperative area
Using a specific type of soap or wipes
Stopping or starting medications (as directed by your doctor)

Important Do not to eat or drink after the time instructed by your hospital. If you still have food in your stomach when you are put to sleep, you could choke.

Morning of Surgery
You may need to be at the hospital up to 2 hours ahead of time, so you might be arriving as early as 5 AM. You’ll enter the hospital day surgery area for check in and registration. From there, the staff will take you to your pre-op holding room to change into a hospital gown. You will have to remove all metal jewelry, contacts, dentures, or anything else that could cause an issue during surgery. You’ll then get an IV for fluids and medications during the procedure.

A LOT of people are going to ask you the same questions over and over again. This isn’t because we don’t know – we have to check at every point that you are the correct person getting the correct procedure. This is also the time for you to ask any questions you have remaining.

The Procedure
The next thing you’ll remember after being wheeled to an operating room is waking up after the procedure is done. Throughout the surgery, someone will usually contact your family at certain intervals to let them know you are ok.

Thanks for watching – I hope this helped give you an idea of what to expect!
