Nearly 40% of Americans drink 3-5 cups of coffee a day, so it’s no wonder bariatric patients often ask, “When can I have coffee again?”

Why does it matter?
It’s extremely important to stay hydrated after bariatric surgery, but you sometimes no longer feel hungry or thirsty. This can be dangerous since dehydration can lead to nausea, decreased healing, and even kidney damage.

For how long?
Many surgeons often recommend avoiding caffeine for the first 30 days after the procedure. My patients at DFW Bariatrics do not have to cut out caffeine, but if your doctor advises you to – please listen to them.

What about caffeine withdrawal?
People can become dependent on caffeine and experience withdrawal symptoms after consuming as little as 100 mg of caffeine per day. Withdrawal symptoms can last up to 10 days and include: headache, fatigue, irritability, muscle pain and stiffness, nausea, vomiting, and depressed mood. For this reason, I don’t have my patients stop caffeine intake altogether.

Tips to keep caffeinated AND hydrated:
Coffee doesn’t count toward fluid goals and can negate fluids you drink, so you have to be able to compensate for that.
Monitor the amount of sugar in the caffeinated beverages you are drinking.
Limit yourself to one cup of a caffeinated beverage per day (or whatever minimum you can to avoid withdrawal).
Track your water intake.
